The first history textbook for elementary schools in Japan, printed in wood engraving, published in Meiji 24 (1891). It explains Japanese history from the national foundation myth of Japan to the 1200s. The book teaches about legendary myths and historical figures with plain Japanese language and illustrations.
It's interesting that history learning starts from myth since it's believed that the current imperial family of Japan is the descendant of the god in the myth age. Actually, the family tree of the Japanese emperor can be traced back to the mythical gods.
