    Description

General - Great American Civil War Era, 1860s Era, Quart 12-Sided, Salt Glaze Pottery with Cobalt Blue "X". Bottle was most likely used for Weiss Beer.
Andrew Steinmetz was a Brewer located in Cleveland, Ohio., from Approx. 1861 - 1866. Cleveland was a important Union Army city providing thousands of troops and millions of dollars in supplies to help the defeat of the Confederate Army. This Stoneware bottle was most certainly made by E.H. Merrill, who immigrated  to Northeastern Ohio from England in the 1820s, and  started making stoneware in Mogadore, Ohio in the1830s. He moved to Akron in 1847 and continued making stoneware, first with Calvin Merrill, then with Henry Merrill. Edwin and Henry were in business together under the name Akron Pottery Co. from 1861-1888. The company's name changed in 1888 to E.H. Merrill & Co.
Stamping - "A. STEINMETZ", in a single line, at the shoulder.
Pottery Works - Most likely Akron Pottery Co. out of Akron, Ohio, a well known supplier of stoneware from that Era and Area, but there is no identifying marks on the bottle that I am aware of.
    Color -  Light Brown
Size -  10" Tall and 3-3/8" at the base.
    Circa - Approx. 1861-1866
Age - Approx. 152 years old.
Condition - Very fine example. Extraordinary color, style and form. Outstanding craftsmanship. Also see condition noted above. This pottery contains manufacturing imperfections, age related marks, voids, chips, and/or makers marks. Please examine photos carefully before purchasing.
Summary - Very nice example of a 1860s, Civil War Era Pottery. Great piece of History and reminder of Days gone by. Nice Bottle for Cleveland and Ohio collectors or any Bottle/Glass collection. Accurate and Honest listings. Professional packaging. Low shipping costs. Combined shipping is welcomed. Thanks for viewing.
