Description
Up for sale is a truly exceptional matching pair (YES you're buying BOTH) of 1870s-1880s tall colored soda/wine/beer bottles from upstate NY merchant W. Gilmore & Son. Both are embossed "W. GILMORE & SON / PAVILION, N.Y." on the front. They've both got crudely applied "wine" style tops, and kicked-up bases with a pointed dot in the middle of the kickup. They're about 10" tall with a 2.75" base diameter. The green has an exceptionally crude lip finish with a wide drippy bit of glass folded onto the stretched neck. It has remnants of metal foil on the neck which was frequently applied onto wine bottles but also Saratoga "spring" water bottles of the era. Its color is a very pleasing medium green with a good bit of teal-green influence. It has a very minuscule amount of exterior usage wear and interior contents stain and is otherwise as-made - no chips, cracks, or damage of any kind.
The blue is a very tough color to pin down, it's something truly special. Depending on the intensity of the lighting it's somewhere between sapphire and cornflower blue. Doesn't seem to be even a hint of green in it. It's got a little more exterior usage wear and interior stain than the green one, you'll notice a couple of small scratches or scuffs on the front, but again no chips or cracks or damage. It's got a nice textured glass surface with hundreds of very tiny bubbles throughout.
I don't have much more to say about these, the pictures speak for themselves. Here's a chance to pick up a matching pair of best-possible, uncleaned never-buried examples of these wonderful NY bottles. Whatever they held, wine or soda or beer, they are sure to stand out in ANY type of collection with their super unique shape and electrifying colors. Satisfaction guaranteed, if you're not in love after handling them in person I’m happy to accept returns.
