CODD EXTRA STRONG GLASS BOTTLE BLUE MARBLE J ROBERTS CASTLEFORD

This auction is for a vintage glass bottle measuring 9 ½” high x 2 ½” wide (at base) that features an embossed image of a castle (Trade Mark) on its front with the text ‘J Roberts’ above the image and ‘Castleford’ beneath it.
On the reverse is ‘Codd’s patent bottle,’ and ‘Extra strong glass.’
On the bottom of the bottle is ‘Made in
India
,’ ’10 oz’ a symbol of a heart and ‘7A2.’
The bottle is very unique with a blue marble at its top and pale green/aqua colored glass.

his bottle design was created by Hiram Codd after he recognized the need for better bottle filling machines and a new type of closure to reduce the need for corks.
By 1873, he had perfected his globe-stoppered bottle.
Mineral water soda manufacturers who wanted to use Codd's Globe Stopper bottles had to pay a yearly fee for a license to use his patent bottle, but this would become free to bottle manufacturers as long as they purchased the marbles, sealing rings and used his groove tool, and the mineral water firms they traded with had already bought a license to use his bottle. Codd also had two factories in
London
solely producing marbles.
This bottle includes the ring at the top, the marble and is in excellent condition with no chips/cracks, etc.
It weighs a little over 25 ounces unpackaged.
