Description
Up for your consideration is an antique 100+ year-old Codd Neck (Marble in the Neck) heavy glass bottle found years ago on Wilson Hill in rural Texas.SOME HISTORY:
* According to Cecil Munsey in his article about Codd Soda Bottles:
“In 1873 Hiram Codd patented his invention of a globe-stopped bottle.
* Codd realized that inserting and capturing a marble in the neck of a bottle would provide a new and effective way of sealing mineral water and soda bottles without corks or external stoppers.
* His bottle used the effervescent pressure of the mineral water itself to force a marble against a rubber washer in the upper ring of the neck of the bottle. This made for a very efficient and durable seal.”
* By 1920 Globe-Stopped Bottles went out of fashion in favor of the new screw and crown tops.
