Elegant Decorative FOOTED CUP & SAUCER, BIRD of PARADISE Pattern ON BLUE CHINTZ w/Floral & Fruit Sprays SPRAYS from Fenton, Staffordshire, England, Smooth Rims & Fancy Handle, circa 1940+
DESCRIPTION:
This set was skillfully designed with the Bird of Paradise pattern using a palette of blue, purple, red, orange and yellow with gold on the high white porcelain. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The light blue chintz is in the background with the birds, flowers and the blackberry on the chintz pattern. The blackberry is also on the inside of the cup. The saucer has the same pattern with the addition of a purple verge line around the well. The gold trim on the rims, foot and the handle is very shiny and accents the fancy handle.
CONDITION:
While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. There is a small flake on the rim of the cup. See the photo #9. Otherwise, there are no issues such as chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, or hairlines. Overall, the trim is glossy.
DIMENSIONS:
The cup has a diameter of 3 1/4" and has a height of 2 3/8". The saucer's diameter is 5 1/2" with a height of 7/8".
HISTORY/MARKS:
Thomas Allen Green and Spencer Green were brothers who bought out other family members in 1876 of a business that could be traced back to 1801. The pottery was located at Minerva Works in Fenton, Staffordshire, England. The company traded as T.A. & S. Green until incorporated as Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. Ltd in 1903. The company was an important exporter to North America and continued limited production during WWII. In 1946, the company purchased Heron Cross Pottery to expand production. In 1948, the name was changed to Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd. The firm continued to be owned & operated by the Green family until 1964 when Semart Importing Co. (the US distributor of Crown Staffordshire) acquired the firm. The Crown Staffordshire name was used until it became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1974. The mark is identified by Geoffrey A. Godden’s (Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks) as #1152 which was used in the 1930-1974 time period. The Registration #592627 was entered on book in 1911 and this pattern was produced 1940+.
