    Description

Japanese Edo period woodblock print depicting the oiran Hanatori of the Ogiya brothel and attendant strolling under cherry blossoms from a series titled “One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Water Margin” by Utagawa Kuniyasu (1794-1832) dating circa 1830.  The series imitates Kuniyoshi’s series of the same title with courtesans replacing the Chinese heroes.  The signature “Ipposai Kuniyasu ga,” kiwame censor’s seal, and seal of the publisher Kagaya Kichibei are at the lower right.  Framed in a gold bamboo-form frame with cream colored silk mat.  Visible paper size: 14 3/4" x nearly 10" (frame: 20 1/2" x 14 1/2").  The print was not examined out of the frame but is visibly in good overall condition and does not appear to be laid down.  Some fading, soiling, rubbing, and wear is evident.  There are some scratches to the frame.  As indicated on the back of the frame, the print was deaccessioned from the Cleveland Museum of Art.  It is from the estate of a Japanese American physician in Tucson, Arizona.  An example of this image can be found on the website of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
