Shenango China was one of the leading manufacturers of American dinnerware and
commercial china for hotels and restaurants
from the 1920's until the late 1980's. The company, headquartered in New Castle, Pennsylvania, absorbed many of its competitors. Shenango dinnerware is easily identified using the backstamp (corporate identification placed on the back or underneath part of the ceramic dish) featuring Native Americans involved in various forms of pottery production.
While there isn't an official Shenango Indian tribe, the name comes from a displaced Seneca tribe that settled in the Shenango Valley along the Shenango River in the 1700s. In about 1912, the company developed a logo that includes a cross-legged breechcloth-covered Indian -- viewed as if you were standing to his right side and behind him -- decorating a piece of Native American pottery. This logo appeared in various forms, along with client's name, through 1979.
In addition to the maker's mark, the Shenango China Company often added the name of the hotel, company or restaurant for whom they made the china.
Shenango also produced dishes for presidents and serving dishes for the White House.  One of Shenango's main product lines was Incaware, restaurant china with a light buff-colored background and various designs added for decoration.  The company purchased Wallace China in 1959 and Mayer China Company in 1964. Shenango was sold in 1968 to Interpace Corporation, and then resold again to the Anchor Hocking Corporation in 1979. All Shenango production stopped in 1991, as the company couldn't rise above increased labor costs and the popularity of inexpensive imported china.
