The author, a Wermacht conscript, joined the Panzer Force after spending his youth in the HitlerJugend. He fought on the Russian Front in 'Operation Barbarossa', first seeing action in the Crimea, at the siege of Leningrad, Kursk & at Stalingrad. He recounts the relief attempts, the grim struggle of endurance & the epic retreat. He survived and spent the last days of WWII in the last ditch attempt to halt the invading Allied forces in the West. He was wounded, captured by the Americans & spent the rest of the war as a POW.
