It is his famous
Abalone Divers
.
Without a doubt, Utamaro is one of the most famous of all Japanese artists of the
Edo Period
. His classic head and shoulders portraits of courtesans, geishas and teahouse waitresses are among the most sought after of all prints. In fact, many serious collectors consider Utamaro’s beauties to be the very soul of
Ukiyo-e
, the art of the
Floating World
.
A beautiful young “ama,” or woman diver for “awabi” or abalone, and a customer inspecting one of the catches.
Historically, the “
ama”
were the wives of fishermen who supplemented their family’s income with this seasonal occupation. In order to move freely underwater they typically dove topless, wearing only their underskirts.
Would be wonderful displayed on your home or office wall.
Utamaro’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the
Metropolitan Museum of Art
, New York; the
Museum of Fine Arts
, Boston; the
British Museum
, London; the
Hermitage Museum
, Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the
Tokyo National Museum,
Tokyo.
