    Description

Up for bid is a vintage book, "Wacker's Manual of the Plan of Chicago ... Municipal Economy," by Walter D. Moody. This well-illustrated 147-page book is copyright 1912 and is in very good condition (see all photos). It was "especially prepared for study in the schools of Chicago" under auspices of the Chicago Plan Commission. This book is extremely rare, espcially in this condition, and is of great historical importance as it was written as a manual for the future of one of the world's most promising cities. As blogger Mike Lydon points out: "From 1911 through the mid-1920s, the Wacker’s Manual was required reading for all eighth-grade public school students. The Manual, commissioned by philanthropist Charles Wacker, was an urban history text and a contemporary treatise on the cultural and physical ambition of Chicago’s 1909 Plan. Wacker, who also served as the Plan’s Chairman, felt Chicago would fulfill its destiny as 'the center of the modern world,' only if its youth were well-educated in the far-reaching goals of the city’s plan. ... The Manual explains the basis of city planning as a multi-disciplinary means to widespread cultural improvement. The text eloquently moves through a history of ancient, European and American cities. With a proper foundation of knowledge established, the author delves into the details of street systems, transportation modes, park systems, and the implementation of Chicago’s own plan." This book would make a welcome addition to anylibrary or collection of historical Chicago memorabilia. See my listings for other vintage items.
