Description

VINTAGE 1840's- 1906  Blob Top Hutchinson Soda Pop Bottle. Embossed on front with "STANDARD BOTTLING COMPANY  ATLANTA GA TRADE MARK REGISTERED.  Back is embossed with "THIS BOTTLE TO BE RETURNED"  Tooled top with smooth base. Has porcelain wire cork inside. Original condition, not cleaned. 7.5 inches tall. Note attached to bottle reads cork stopper, but porcelain was the actual type used during this period.

This glassy roundup showcases a sampling of the hundreds of soda brands produced from the 1800s to the 1970s (at which time bottles gave way to aluminum cans). The oldest of the group—stubby blue vessels known as "blob tops"—debuted in the 1840s and were originally capped with porcelain corks encased in wire. Though handsome, the FDA outlawed them in 1906 due to sanitary concerns. That short shelf life helps them net more than 0 each.
